The Apothecary Table Lamp is hand painted by artist Sophie Coryndon in her Sussex studio. The design is inspired by Moorish earthenware jars known as Albarelli. These jars were used to hold ointments, medicines and even gunpowder and became popular in Italian apothecaries in the 15th century. To differentiate their contents the jars were painted with individual designs which Sophie references in the artwork of each lamp.
Each of the 6 designs is limited to an edition of 30 with names which allude to their original medicinal contents.
This design most closely resembles the albarello jar that initially inspired Sophie’s design for the ‘Albarello’ fabric and the series of lamps. Elegant and calligraphic, the flowers on their willowy stems scroll down the jar in subtly delineated panels. The design is named for the exuberant Indian grass vetiver, from which a sharp, earthy essential oil is extracted.
